Louisiana Approves Flag Football Pilot Program
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has approved a two-year flag football pilot program. The 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years will be crucial as LHSAA bylaws require 80 schools before a sport can be sanctioned. Assuming no roadblocks, flag football could become a sanctioned varsity sport in Louisiana as soon as the 2027-28 school year.
14 states have sanctioned flag football at the high school level: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. Washington will vote on a proposal later this month that could see flag football sanctioned as a high school sport. North Carolina will also discuss whether to sanction the sport later this spring.
